Thank you!!
Last weekend, over a hundred alumni converged on New Haven for what turned out to be an insanely fun, raucous, and music-filled reunion. We sang, we laughed, we cried, we got a bit too tipsy, and we reunited with family. Thank you everyone who came out and made it such a success.
Photos and Videos
The alumni org is collecting photos and videos from this weekend! If you have any you can share, please drop them in our Gump Dump folder. Archivist Josh Dodes '95 has been sifting through and adding them to our Digital Gump Archives (which you should check out! You may need to request access, but it's worth it.)
Last call for reunion merch!
Many alums sported new styles at the reunion, wearing reunion tee's and toting reunion totes (which were especially cute). We'll be closing the store soon, so if you saw something you liked, get it now!

The Complete Schedule

An even more detailed schedule also lives on our reunion website at:
https://www.gumpalumni.org/reunion/reunion-detailed-schedule
But first, a quick note on travel...
If you're flying into or out of Bradley Airport or any of the NYC airports, Nina Rastogi '02 created a clever spreadsheet to help alumni find each other and set up their own carpools. If this applies to you, check out this doc below, fill in your information, and look for others with similar travel schedules: Carpool Google Spreadsheet link

Spotlight: Music & Shtick
What would the reunion weekend be without plenty of music and hilarity? From Mory's to the alumni rehearsals to brunch performances, we've got you covered. And the most exciting part: we have a new arrangement we'll be learning a new shoe song together!
Don't Make Me Sing...
Yes yes we're coming to watch the undergrads perform, sure sure sure. But ALSO we like to make mouth sounds too. Here's when we get to be the stars:
Friday Mory's (8:30 - 10pm): We'll sing rounds of "It's" and probably a few Gump classics in between hors d'oeuvres and drinks.
Saturday Rehearsals (11:30am - 3pm): This is when we'll freshen up our skills for the Sunday brunch and learn a new song(!)... more info below.
Snow Job (6 - 8:30pm): We'll snap our fingers, inappropriately hum foofs, and then close the show by all storming the stage for "Zombie Jamboree.
Sunday Brunch (10am-1pm): We'll close the weekend with our traditional alumni brunch, this time in the ballroom at the Omni (with the candle stick). Groups from each era will perform, and we'll close with a few group songs.
Alumni Rehearsals
The first thing we'll do on Saturday will be the alumni rehearsals at the Loria Center, 190 York St. (the newer part of the School of Architecture). Alumni will group up by era to practice their brunch sets and whatever else they feel, and then around 1:30pm we will start learning "Don't Dream It's Over" (arr. Brian Kim '04), first in sections and then as a full alumni choir.
Check out this schedule below, because different era groups have different call times. (This is to allow people to sing with more than one era if they want.)
11:30am: Classes of '83—'89, '96—'00, and '09—'14
12:30pm: Classes of '90—'95, '01—'08, and '15—'22
1:30pm: Sectionals by voice part
2:30pm: Full choir
"Don't Dream It's Over"
We've got a special treat this year! During our rehearsals, we'll be learning "Don't Dream It's Over" by Crowded House (arr. Brian Kim '04). The current Gump picked the song and are learning it too!
Even if you can't make the brunch, we invite you to learn the song with us. And if you would like to get a head start, here is a link to the arrangement and guide tracks: the "Don't Dream It's Over" Dropbox folder.
Bring your photos, videos, etc. to reunion!
The alumni org is collecting old photos, videos, gig posters, and SJ recordings, all to add to our digital archives. We will digitize them and return them to you after reunion.
Here's what we're looking for:
Snow Job recordings from before 2003 or after 2014
Any and all videos
Photos from your time in the group
Old posters, flyers, tour guides, etc.
Shticks

The Alumni Survey Edition
A New Project
The Alumni Database: what is is, why it is, and how you can help
This year, in conjunction with our 41st reunion, we are creating a new way for alumni and current Gumplings to connect with each other: whether you're trying to organize a get-together in your area, or you're a new grad looking to find Gump alumni in your industry.
To that end, we are collecting information from any and all Gump alumni in a short 5-minute survey. It is totally optional, but please participate if you can!
Survey link: https://airtable.com/shrWWHHAPsZrf9ns3
Based on your answers, the Gump alumni org is planning to put together a private invite-only spreadsheet for us to be able to find each other. We know it sounds dry, but this could be a major boon for job-seeking Gumplings and for folks who want to connect with their local Gump families.
We are so appreciative of the folks who already noticed the link and filled out the survey. Thank you!!

Our goal is for every Gumpling to be able to attend our reunion regardless of financial circumstances. Fortunately, thanks to some very generous alumni, we have already raised enough to fund a number of fee waivers, and we expect to be able to help with some travel expenses as well.
If you would like a fee waiver or help with other reunion costs, please email your request to Scott Hillier '10 (s.thompsonhillier@gmail.com) and he can get you set up!
Why You Should Donate

For years, Viva's has been the traditional first-stop for Snow Job revelry, but it's also a tight fit when we're expecting 120+ attendees, so we could use your help deciding. Please take a quick moment to fill out this 2-question survey about the pre-game:

More Reunion Info Coming Soon...
The reunion committee has almost finished booking venues, getting merch quotes, and reserving discount hotel blocks. We are hoping to send out the schedule and registration in early December.
In the meantime, if you have any questions about reunion, please feel free to reply to this email or contact reunion chair Sara 'Ace' Koulen '87 at skoulen@hotmail.com.
Nominations for the Board of Directors
Every year, the Mixed Company of Yale Alumni (MCYA) holds elections for the Board. Please reply to this email if you're interested in getting involved or if you have any questions about the Board and what we do! We'd love to add some new voices to our crew 😊
Cheers,
Mixed Company of Yale Alumni
Dearest Gumplings,
We are excited to announce that the date of Snow Job has been set and that we are officially planning our 41st Reunion for the weekend of February 3-5, 2023.
Please save the date, and feel free to start booking travel! The main events will be on Saturday (rehearsals during the day followed by Snow Job and our afterparty at night) and Sunday brunch.
More information will come over the coming months, but there is one thing we ask right now:
❗❗Please take our preliminary reunion survey❗❗
https://forms.gle/JY9wzaXuubbm6rdJA
We so appreciate your timely responses. This will be very helpful to the reunion organizers, just to get a rough headcount for the event. It is not an official RSVP, don't worry!
In the meantime, if you have any questions about reunion, please feel free to reply to this email or contact reunion chair Sara 'Ace' Koulen '87 at skoulen@hotmail.com.

Dear Gumplings--
The current group needs help ASAP to prepare their web portal for this year's rush (unfortunately their old web portal crashed). If you have experience in developing websites, please read below and respond to Rohit at rohit.mathur@yale.edu.
Yours,
Board of Directors

Hello!
I'm writing to ask for alumni help with some of our website upkeep — I was wondering if you could please forward this to any alums that may be able to help.
We are looking for any tech-savvy alumni who would be willing to help us build anew Rush Portal (the page on our website where rushees can sign in to keep track of their rush meals, find audition materials. and see cute pictures of Mixed Co on tour). MixedCo's Rush Portal has set our group apart and improved the rush process for prospective Bagels for years, but sadly the old Rush Portal stopped working earlier this year and we don’t think it’s possible to fix (thanks a lot, Google!). None of the current group are master coders, and we thought we’d reach out first to the alums in case there’s any tech wizards who might be able to whip something up.
As rush approaches, we would really appreciate it if any alumni willing to help could reach out as soon as possible – thank you in advance!
Best regards,
Rohit Mathur '25
Oh Mighty Gump!!
Although it feels like it's been ages, you may recall that around this time last year we were planning to hold our big 40th reunion in February 2022, only to have Omicron destroy our plans a few months later.
Well, guess what?? The reunion is back on, just one year late!
The alumni org is starting to plan our iconic Gump 41st Reunion, tentatively set forFebruary 3-5, 2023. Mark your calendars! (But don't buy any plane tickets just yet... we're hoping to finalize in early Fall.)
In the meantime, if you're itching to get together sooner, there is a wonderful Gump gathering coming up that you're all invited to:
NYC Gump Hang
Near, far, wherever you are: the NYC branch of the Gump alumni org is hosting a get-together for all Gump alumni and current students. If you can make it, please do! There will be food, drinks, and probably some singing as well.
Where: Tanya Wexler's ('92) home in the West Village (on the roof, weather permitting)
When: Saturday, August 13th, 1-4pm
Eventbrite RSVP Link: https://bit.ly/GumpAug13
If you can make it, please RSVP on the above Eventbrite link by Mon, Aug 8th (the earlier the better), and +1s are totally welcome as well.
Yours,
Board of Directors
Mixed Company of Yale Alumni
Hello Gump fam --
Mark your calendars for TOMORROW (Sunday, April 10th) as we just found out that Mixed Company will be live-streaming "Springjob," which will start at 7:30pm ET.
They've got new taps, new music, and a whole new attitude.
Here is the link to watch the Gump LIVE at 7:30pm ET tomorrow:
And if you can make it in-person, the show will be at SSS (1 Prospect St) at 7:30pm. It's totally free for alumni (bring your bowling shirts!) but you must register in advance for a ticket since we do live in COVID times. Click here to register if you want to attend in-person.
Forever in Gump,
Board of Directors
Mixed Company of Yale Alumni
Hello crusties!
As you can imagine, a cappella rush this Fall was a little weird, with 14 underclassmen groups all scrambling to tap two whole classes of singers. Mixed Company was fortunate to get seven incredible new taps in the Fall, freshmen Veronica Zimmer, Sophia Schloss, and Lauren Marut, as well as sophomores Iris Yang, Ivana Ramirez, Rachel Folmar, and Soleil Singh.
Well even more good news came a couple weeks ago, when Mixed Company welcomed four more new taps into the fold, Isaac Mukamal, Rohit Mathur, Isaac Yu, and Ilia Sukhovalov.
These newest bagels will be freshly out of the oven just in time for Snow Job on Sunday, April 10th.
But wait, there's more:
We want you!
Every year we elect members to our alumni org's Board, but this year we want to officially open it up for all Gump alumni to join in. There are two main ways you can do this, and they're both fun and easy:
How about helping to plan a Gump gathering in your area? We missed out on reunion this year, but that doesn't mean we can't hang out! If you think it would be fun to have a "mini-reunion" in your neck of the woods, please reply to this email or reach out to Jen Jacobsen '89 (jennifer.g.jacobsen@gmail.com) and we can help get it off the ground.
Or perhaps you'd like to join one of our "committees"? The Board has a number of small groups that take care of different activities, and we'd love for you to join any of the following:
The Archives & Music Committee collects and digitizes old Gump stuff and organizes fun music projects.
The Events Committee provides resources for anyone seeking to plan Gump alumni events (besides reunion).
The 41st Reunion Committee... is pretty self-explanatory.
The Undergraduate Committee liaises with and supports the undergrads.
The Nominating Committee collects and finalizes the nominations for next year's Board.
Please reach out here if you have questions or if you'd be interested in participating in any of these groups so we can connect you with the appropriate committee chair.
Recently Paul Kraske '92 reached out to let us know about a virtual benefit concert hosted by his D.C.-based a cappella group Augmented 8. He also asked if the Mixed Company Alumni would be willing to "perform" (as in, share our wonderful "Seasons of Love" video with their audience).
The virtual benefit is called Sing Out for Shelter and all proceeds go to homeless shelters in the D.C. area. To watch all the performances (including videos from Mixed Company, The Whiffenpoofs, Whim 'n Rhythm, and more) and to donate to the cause, please follow this link:

GUMP 4EVA!
Board of Directors
Mixed Company of Yale Alumni
Happy 40th Gumpversary!
We may not be reuniting in-person this year, but the Gump has turned 40, and it is time to celebrate. This Fall, over forty alumni from across the group's history collaborated remotely to sing a Gump standard from the 1990s-2000s, "Seasons of Love" (arranged by Ben Eakeley '00 and Ted Gibson '10).
And now, on what would have been the eve of our reunion, we can at the very least look back on 40 years of incredible singing and camaraderie with this spectacular video put together by Brian Kim '04 and Chaka Jaliwa '11. Thank you so much to all the alumni who participated. Even in the midst of a global pandemic, the Gump keeps finding ways to get together and celebrate our music and history. ☺
Without further ado, please enjoy this wonderful video below, and here is a link to the audio-only version (available for download).
Click here to watch the Gump's 40th anniversary "Seasons of Love" video
... and don't forget about the alumni Annual Meeting and new Directors!

Dearest Gump-ites!!
As we sing a lament over not being able to celebrate our reunion this year, we can still stop and smell the roses. This year the Gump turned 40, many of our alumni got together to sing "Seasons of Love" (more on that soon!), and Mixed Company released their EPThird Degree in part thanks to the many alumni who contributed to our fundraising efforts last year.
Sadly we had to postpone our reunion (don't worry: we'll celebrate the 41st next year!), but at least Mixed Company managed to reschedule Snow Job to Sunday, April 10th, and alumni are invited to attend.
But now it's time to focus on the here-and-now. The Gump Alumni Organization cordially invites you to vote and/or join us at the:

Important Reunion Update
Dearest Gump alums,
It is with crusty fingers and a heavy heart that I write to update you that the alumni board and the 40th reunion committee have decided not to pursue a Snow Job reunion in early February of next year. With roughly 50% of our survey respondents indicating that they'd be unable or unwilling to attend and the University barring non-students from campus spaces, we agreed that too many factors made this year too risky to pull off.
We are actively discussing other options, including holding a 41st reunion in early 2023. Please send me an email at s.thompsonhillier@gmail.com if you want to weigh in directly.
We hope you and your families are healthy and we look forward to updating you on our plans to get us all back together again.

In Other News: We Are Seeking Nominations for the Board
If you would be interested in becoming involved in the Gump alumni board, there is at least one spot open for the next term, which starts in February 2022. Please reply to this email or reach out to ian@gumpalumni.org if you are interested in finding out more information.
Crustily,
The Gump Alumni Org
Big news!!
Yesterday, November 30th, 2021, the still-edible bagels released new music for the listener's consumption. Not only is their new EP "Third Degree" fabulous, but it is also a result of alumni involvement last Fall.
Thank you again to everyone who donated to our Annual Fund last year (oh and don't worry: we haven't forgotten to bug you about this year's push... more info to come as we figure out reunion). Thanks to your donations, we were able to both supply Mixed Company with the equipment and software needed to record as well as fund the mixing/mastering of these three great tracks. We helped enable them to do the real work of recording remotely (which was no small task!)
Click here for a link to "Third Degree" on Spotify, Apple Music, or iTunes (you will need to be logged in to one of those to listen to the full tracks). And please see below for more information on the project, direct from biz Will Evans:
Hey Everyone!!!
Mixed Company 2020-2021 just released its EP "Third Degree!"
We recorded the songs in separate apartments and houses under the amazing leadership of Pitch Ian Berlin and Assistant Pitch David Culbreth using equipment and software made possible by all of you wonderful alumni!!! The EP features the Tap Class of 2019 and arranging credit goes to Zak Kayal ’17 (“Gone”) and Aïssa Guindo ’21 (“Limbo” and “715 - CRΣΣKS”). The EP is up as of midnight on Spotify and Apple Music.
Here is the Spotify link!! (but you can search it on Apple Music too)
https://open.spotify.com/album/7N1BZC3bVfoPyXoisaldgS
We were so excited to be able to work on a project even during such a crazy year and we hope you enjoy listening, we certainly enjoyed putting it together.
Much Gump Love,
Will Evans
Hello Gumpsters!
If you are one of the over 80 alumni who have already filled out our SJ40 survey, you are amazing and we love you and you can disregard the rest of this email.
If you have not yet filled out the SJ40 survey, you are also amazing and we love you, and you have one last chance to make your voice heard!
Whether or not you can participate in our 40th reunion in February (and there are plenty of reasons to be hesitant!), we would love to hear your thoughts and get a temperature read on how many people we should be planning for.
The 3-minute survey closes this Friday. You can respond here.
Ever yours,
The Gump Alumni Org

Hello fellow gumplings:
As we approach February 2022, the Snow Job 40 reunion committee would like your input on how we might structure a safe and fun weekend of singing, schticking, and merriment.
This brief, three minute survey is designed to help us plan during a very challenging time. Whether you plan with certainty to attend (or not!) or are very much on the fence, your response will help us calibrate how we spend our time and resources.
We intend to stay in touch with the current group, the University, and the Alumni Association to determine if such an event is possible at all. You'll hear from us in the coming weeks after we've collected your responses.
Thanks,
Scott Hi Ho Hillier '10

Bagels near and far,
The "Seasons of Love" videos and recordings have started rolling in. We've got all the parts covered, but we still want more... and the deadline is this Monday, September 6th!
Will we squeeze you in if you're a little late? Yes of course, but please let us know now so we can make sure to leave space for you in the final video.
And if you're on the fence, then you should definitely record yourself—think of this as the first event of our 40th reunion. You do not want to miss out!
Forever yours,
The Gump Alumni
P.S. In case you need them, the recording instructions are below :)

Hello Mixed Company alums far and wide!
For those of you I have not met, hi! I’m Brian. I was in Mixed Company from ‘00-’04, and am now on the alumni board.
TL;DR summary of the following email:
We’re going to be making a video of all of us singing “Seasons of Love” from our homes!
We would love to have a video of you singing your shoe part to the song, and we have provided all the materials you need to learn and record it.
We will organize a Zoom to say hi and go over the music and process.
Get us your video by Labor Day, Sept 6!
It’s Mixed Company’s 40th anniversary this year! That is WILD. As we gear up for reunion, and reflect on the past year and a half, the alumni board had an idea -- through the magic of technology, we should all reach out across the country (and world) and join voices to do what we joined Mixed Co to do -- sing! Over the next few months, we would love your help in creating a video of Mixed Co alums singing “Seasons of Love” from their homes. You know, one of these things, but a cappella and with approximately 100% less Daveed Diggs.
“But how, Brian??!” you ask, incredulously. And I’m glad you asked! Here’s how it will work, and all it will take from you is a computer, your phone or tablet, headphones, and the talent the universe has bestowed upon you.
I have prepared a set of MP3s for you all to sing along to, as well as a PDF of Ted Gibson’s ‘09 version of Ben Eakley’s ‘00 arrangement. You can access all the files here: Seasons of Love Guide MP3s
In that folder, you will see the following 13 MP3s:
#00 -- A full mix of me singing all the parts
#01-#06 -- Individual MP3s of me singing each part on its own, to a click (so we all sing the same tempo and key)
#07-#12 -- Supplemental MP3s of full mixes with ONE part LOUDER than all the others
A full recording of the song from an album, so you can get the vibe
“Okay, I’ve downloaded your files. You sound… not terrible, Brian. Not sure if you’d be tapped now? Anyway, what do I do next?”
Great question! We would love it if you could record a video of you singing. If you don’t want to record a video, that’s fine too! You can just record audio. Whichever you are most comfortable with! Click on these links to find specific directions on how to record and deliver the files:
(Note: If you are familiar with recording and have the proper software and microphones, etc, feel free to record the audio however you like. The files are at 93bpm.)
And that’s it! We would like to have all of your recordings by Labor Day (Sept 6). We will edit all the audio and video together, and then in February 2022, Mixed Company alumni everywhere will have a video keepsake from the 40th anniversary that not only is a celebration of singing and friendship, but also is a capsule for these historic times.
We will also organize a Zoom where we can all say hi, catch up a bit, and go over the music together. Please stay tuned for the date and link!
Please let me (brian@brianhkim.com) or Adam Blau ‘97 (adam@adamblau.com) know if you have any questions at all. We are both professional composers/musicians and have lots of experience with this sort of thing. We are here to help!
Love to you all,
Brian “Eager Beaver” Kim ‘04, and the Mixed Company Alumni Board
Gumplings Far and Wide —
We have a couple updates on the "Seasons of Love" recording project for those who couldn't make yesterday's rehearsal:
You can still watch and sing along! We recorded the rehearsal and it is viewable if you follow this link: https://youtu.be/yjoIxiJxAK8
And wear your Mixed Co gear when you record. Some people asked about dress code, and it's totally optional (don't stress if you can't find your bowling shirt). But if you have a bowling shirt or other Gump clothing/memorabilia, the video is the perfect time to put it on display.
Also, this connects to one other important question for us to tackle before the reunion:
Do you know where your bowling shirt is?
If you need a new one before our reunion (Feb 4-6, 2022), please reply to this email to let us know. Sure, the style has changed a little, but we'll help get you one :)
Yours in Gump,
The Gump Alumni Org
"Seasons of Love" Rehearsal - 8/15/21
Dear Songbirds,
We have two important dates coming up!
Important date #1 is an all-alumni rehearsal coming up this Sunday(!!). On Sunday, August 15th at 4pm EST (1pm PST), Brian Kim '04 will be leading us in a Zoom rehearsal to learn and/or brush up on our parts for the recording of "Seasons of Love".
Please join if you can! The meeting details are below, and if you need sheet music or have questions (or simply don't know what we're talking about), please see Brian's message about the project at the end of this email.
Important date #2 is Snow Job, which we just confirmed will take place on Saturday, February 5th, 2022. That means the 40th Reunion is officially scheduled for February 4th-6th, 2022.
Get excited!

Crusties and Crustiers,
Four decades ago, Mixed Company was founded as the most elite, powerful, and scandalous a cappella slash sketch comedy group this side of the Mississippi. We've made it through flat tires, emotional breakdowns, people quitting to join the Alley Cats, and now even a global pandemic.
We endured it all together, and now it's about time to celebrate! And yes that means exactly what you think it means: it's time to get ready for the 40th Reunion!!
Please mark February 4-6, 2022 as the *tentative* reunion dates. A lot is still in flux, but between Mixed Company and the alumni org, we're doing everything in our power to secure that weekend (pandemic permitting, of course).
Furthermore, if you would be interested in volunteering to help organize the reunion, please reply to this email to let the alumni org know.
We also have one more *very* exciting project in the build-up to the reunion, so please continue reading how you can get involved:

Tomorrow evening (April 28, 2021) at 8pm, Mixed Company of Yale Alumni will be featured in a Yale Alumni Association ("YAA") Board of Governors event for its joint fundraiser with the Mixed Company of Yale in support of four Black Lives Matter organizations. Hosted by the YAA Board of Governors' Alumni Communities Committee, the event — "Responding to the Movement: Conversations with Alumni Leaders on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Action" -- will highlight the diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives of MCYA and three other 2020 YAA Board of Governors Excellence Awards winners.
More information on the event is available below. Please join us for what will surely be a thoughtful and informative conversation!

April 28, 2021
8 p.m. ET
Online
This informative and interactive event spotlights four of the 2020 YAA Board of Governors Excellence Awards winners, who were recognized for their outstanding diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Their response to the movement toward racial equality and social justice serve as models of best practices, which can help guide fellow alumni toward their own meaningful efforts.
After a brief introduction, the attendees will move into breakout rooms with one of the four award winners to prompt conversation. Representatives from Mixed Company of Yale Alumni, Yale Alumni Association of the Northwest, Yale Black Alumni Association, and YaleWomen Houston chapter will share their experiences and insights with attendees in breakout sessions and answer questions live.
A brief 5- to 10-minute video prepared by each of the award winners is available for viewing as preparation for the conversations. In these videos they share their planning, purpose, and the path forward.
When you register for the event you will have the opportunity to pre-select whichever breakout room you would like to join. (Note: For those who have updated Zoom to the latest version, you will be able to use the roaming breakout feature in Zoom once the breakout rooms open and self-select whichever room you would like to join, otherwise you will be assigned to a breakout room.)
The Mixed Company of Yale Alumni group partnered with the Mixed Company of Yale student singing group to use their voices to support and uplift the voices of Black people nationwide via a social media campaign that raised more than $6,000 for four Black Lives Matter organizations.
The Yale Black Alumni Association planned and held virtual programs that addressed the well-being of Black alumni during a time of racial turmoil. The first session, titled “Emotional and Cultural Strength for the Journey Ahead,” addressed the entire community of Black alumni. The second session, titled “On Black Motherhood for the Journey Ahead,” featured Black alumnae from across generations and at different stages of life and of parenting.
The Yale Alumni Association of the Northwest created an Arts in Minnesota virtual series that began with an examination of the local arts communities’ responses to George Floyd’s murder. And another early event spotlighted theaters in the region that showcase work by artists of color.
The YaleWomen Houston chapter responded to the George Floyd murder with a two-part virtual discussion of race and privilege, held in June with expert Denise Hamilton, founder of WatchHerWork.com.
Dear Gump Alumni,

Hello everyone!
We imagine you have seen this on our social media already, but we wanted to reach out to all of Mixed Company and provide our statement, compiled resources, and fundraising effort with this new update below. Please read and we hope you get involved in some capacity. We love you guys.
UPDATE: We are excited to announce that we have already received $1,365 from our generous donors! When matched, that makes for a donation of $2,730 to these amazing organizations! We can still match another $81 in donations before our campaign ends next Friday, so be sure to keep them coming! While we are nearing our upper limit for matching capabilities, our campaign is nowhere near over. We would love to challenge everyone to continue to put the same amount of energy behind supporting both these wonderful organizations and our Black friends & family -- above and beyond what we are capable of matching.

To be silent is to be complicit. Mixed Company of Yale stands in unwavering solidarity with the Black community. We wholeheartedly condemn the murder of Black people at the hands of law enforcement, and we condemn a judicial system that both upholds and profits from the racism, white supremacy, and insidious antiblack ideology that has run rampant in America for the past 400+ years.
As members of an Ivy League institution, we acknowledge our privilege and our shared complicity in systems that have historically worked to silence Black voices and strip Black folx of their basic human rights— including the right to life. We hereby commit as both a group and as individuals to educate ourselves in active anti-racism, aiming to better support our Black group members, alums, and Black folx across the country.
As a first step toward lasting change, we would like to use our platform to help raise money for organizations doing crucial work. As there are several amazing campaigns supporting nonprofits dedicated to criminal justice reform, we have decided to continue the push to support Black folx by selecting organizations which focus on celebrating and enriching Black lives alongside those preventing Black deaths. The following organizations work to support and uplift the voices of Black folx both in New Haven and across the US year-round, and we will be splitting donations evenly among them.
The Citywide Youth Coalition (https://www.cwyc.org/about) is a collection of over 500 youth-serving staff and community members in the New Haven urban region, dedicated to developing and supporting youth-led campaigns to lead change in New Haven politics, as well as providing educational resources and opportunities for local youth aged 14-25.
The Okra Project (https://www.theokraproject.com/) is a collective that seeks to address the global cWonderful Bagels, crusty and oh-lord-that's-crusty alike:
First off, we thank you all for your amazing & generous support this past year! Together we beefed up our Digital Archives, helped Mixed Company raise thousands of dollars for racial justice; and, with more than $7,000 in donations to our inaugural Annual Fund drive, we financed Mixed Company's 501(c)(3) application and equipped them with tools to sing and record together remotely. The Yale Alumni Association (YAA) even recognized this awesomeness with a Board of Governors Excellence Award (more on that below).
Secondly, we invite you to vote and/or join us at the:
Mixed Company of Yale Alumni Annual Meeting
Zoom on Sunday, February 7, 2021 at 3:30 p.m. EST
At the meeting, we will be discussing our plans for the coming year and we would love your input. We will also be electing half of the Board, so on that note:
PLEASE VOTE NOW! We ask for your vote to approve the following slate of nominees for our Board of Directors for the two-year 2021-2023 term:
M. Tracey Ober '85
Johanna Schlegel '85
Adam Blau '97
Brian Kim '05
Mark Dunn '07
Ian Janer '11
You may vote in one of two ways:
At the Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 7th at 3:30pm via Zoom; or
By responding to this email with a simple "yea" or "nay" vote.
FAQ
Wait, I'm voting for all of the nominees?
Yes. This is the slate put forward by the Nominating Committee, so all you have to do is give a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
When do I have to vote by?
Your votes may be submitted at any time before our Mixed Company of Yale Alumni Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 7, 2021.
Aren't there other Board members?
Yes. Only half the Board is elected each year, so this year's nominees will be in the good company of Jen Jacobsen '89, Norman Kim '93, Josh Dodes '95, David Martinez-Bulla '13, and Zak Kayal '18.
How can I get involved?
That's easy. First off, if you can, join us for the Mixed Company of Yale Alumni Annual Meeting on Sunday, February 7, 2021. This is a wonderful time to find out about the Board's plans and schemes for the coming year and to share your thoughts. Please reply to this email if you would like to attend via Zoom or call in.
You can also reach out to Ian or Tracey to find out how you can join Board committees and/or get on the nomination list for next year's Board.
Last but not least, you can always make a tax-deductible donation via PayPal or Facebook.
On January 13, 2021, the YAA Board of Governors handed out Excellence Awards to a number of alumni and alumni organizations for community-oriented work during the 2019-2020 school year. Mixed Company of Yale Alumni won an Excellence Award for our role in helping Mixed Company distribute resources, spread awareness, offer lifelong learning educational materials about Black lives, and raise more than $6,000 for racial justice causes in June.
Thank you to Ian Janer, Brian Sogol, and Scott Hillier for your organizing efforts, and to all alumni who donated to the effort!
Finally, we wanted to leave you with this wonderful video Mixed Company recorded over winter break of their arrangement of "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green.
In the meantime, don't forget to submit your vote for the new members of the Board by 3:30 p.m. EST on Sunday, February 7, 2021.

The Okra Project (https://www.theokraproject.com/) is a collective that seeks to address the global crisis faced by Black Trans people by bringing home cooked, healthy, and culturally specific meals and resources to Black Trans people wherever The Okra Project can reach them. The Okra Project’s work resonates in particular with Mixed Company now, given that June is Pride Month.
Color of Change (https://colorofchange.org/) leads campaigns that build real power for Black communities by challenging injustice, holding corporate and political leaders accountable, commissioning game-changing research on systems of inequality, and advancing solutions for racial justice that can transform our world.
The Innocence Project’s (https://www.innocenceproject.org/) mission is to exonerate the staggering number of innocent people who remain incarcerated through DNA testing, and to bring reform to the system responsible for their unjust imprisonment.
We commit to matching up to $1246 in donations, so we encourage you to donate with us to maximize our collective impact. (see UPDATE at top: We are excited to announce that we have already received $1,108 from our generous donors! When matched, that makes for a donation of $2216 to these amazing organizations! We can still match up to an additional $138 in donations before our campaign ends next Friday, so be sure to keep them coming!)
There are 3 main ways to donate:
1.Venmo your donation(s) to @MixedCompany directly, and we will match it 1:1! If you would like your full donation to go specifically to one of the four groups we are supporting please indicate that in the description, if you are impartial/want to support all of the groups we will split the donation evenly among the four organizations we are supporting!
2.Go directly to the website(s) of the organization(s) you want to support, and then respond to this email/message @mixedcompany on instagram or FB a screenshot of your donation! We will then match that amount.
3.Donate through any matching programs that your employer may have, and send us a screenshot so that we can double match your donation!
That being said, we also recognize that donation without education and reformation is not enough, as well as that action through donating is not financially feasible for everyone. Below we have compiled a list of action points that we urge you to follow through on: signing petitions for individuals and to advocate for systemic reform, calling mayors and police departments to demand justice, and following organizations which promote antiracist ideals. These steps are important ways that each of us can help compact racial justice.

Police brutality is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to systemic injustices towards Black folx in America, and the importance of Black lives cannot nor should not end once #BLM stops trending. Join us in doing the work to help ensure that the lasting impact of #BLM doesn’t stop after the hashtag stops trending: vote, educate yourself and others, use your platforms to leave spaces for and uplift the voices of Black creators, and advocate for anti-racism in all facets of daily life.
The members of Mixed Company are personally working to educate ourselves through critical reading and media consumption that highlights multiple aspects of Black lives and elevates Black creators’ voices. The following are a few resources that our group members personally recommend.

Gump love,
Mixed Company 2019-2020
Kids! <chhh>
As the newly appointed chair of the Gump Archives and Music Committee, I'd like to start by saying that anyone who makes direct eye contact with me will be shot. Also, I'd like a gold robe and a steak sandwich. Somebody make all that happen.
Okay, those preliminaries out of the way, the real reason for this email: the Board would like to make it our mission to digitize and preserve as much Gumpanalia as possible. It is our hope that after coronavirus wipes out civilization, the survivalists who remain will use our archives as a blueprint for how to start again. (They will build a nivilization, presumably.) That means pictures, videos, live audio, schtick scripts (say that five times fast), etc.
We are asking you to do one of two things, posthaste:
OPTION #1. You digitize (scan, type up, etc.) what you have and email or upload it to me, and I will organize all of it for a permanent archive we can all access. This is vastly preferable, mostly because the more digitizing I have to do, the less time I have to devote to my toddler, who is too stupid to take care of herself.
How to do Option #1:
Email your files to gumparchives@gmail.com OR, if they're too big, upload them directly to our Google Drive at this link. We just ask that you make a folder first with your name on it and then upload your files into that folder. That's it! I'll organize it from there.
OPTION #2. You snail-me what you've got and I'll do the legwork. I'm assuming and hoping this will mostly be audio and video stuff. (If you send me books or boxes of photographs you could scan yourself, it will incur my rage. It is white-hot.) Please let me know in the package or by email whether you want your stuff returned, tossed, or ferreted away into the forgotten caverns beneath Dwight.
How to do Option #2:
Please send snail-mail to Josh Dodes, 3 Hickory Lane, Cherry Hill, NJ 08003. If you're sending a package, please, please DO NOT require signature. (It's a very safe neighborhood, and I don't want people knocking or calling when my daughter might be napping!)
Let's do this.
Josh "Salsa" Dodes '95
Esteemed Gumplings,
2019 was a big year for Mixed Company's alumni. We incorporated as a non-profit, got 501(c)(3) status, and thanks to your help raised over $600 towards future projects.
And now that we're official, we need your input more than ever, starting with your vote to approve the new members of our Board of Directors.
Please take a look at our slate of Board nominees below. You may vote in one of two ways:
At our first-ever Annual Meeting on Saturday, January 25th at 2pm. You are welcome to join us in New Haven or via teleconference; or
By responding to this email with a simple "yea" or "nay" vote.
For your consideration, here are the nominees for the MCYA Board of Directors:
Jen Jacobsen '89
Norman Kim '93
Josh Dodes '95
David Martinez '13
Zak Kayal '18
Wait, I'm voting for all of the nominees?
Yes! There is room on the Board for all our nominees, so we made the process simple and easy. All we need is a thumbs up or a thumbs down!
When do I have to vote by?
Your votes may be submitted any time before the meeting on the 25th.
Whatever happened to the old Board?
Not to fear! The new Directors will be joining the existing Board: Tracey Ober '85, Jo Schlegel '85, Mark Dunn '07, Ian Janer '11, and Scott Hillier '11.
How can I get involved?
That's easy! First off, if you can join us for the Annual Meeting on the 25th, that is a wonderful time to find out about and share your thoughts on the Board's plans and schemes for the coming year and beyond. Please reply to this email if you would like to attend or call in.
You can also reach out to Ian or Tracey to find out how you can join Board committees or get on the nominations list for next year's Board.
Last but not least, you can always make a tax-deductible donation via PayPal.
In the meantime, don't forget to submit your vote for the new members of the Board by 2pm EST on Saturday, January 25th.
Live long and Gump,
The MCYA Board of Directors '19-'20
Dear Gump Alumni,
The Mixed Company of Yale Alumni Board of Directors is pleased to share some exciting news:
The Mixed Company Alumni Association is a real thing! With real legal paperwork, and real nonprofit status. Really!
The Alumni Association has a real Board of Directors. Don’t believe it? See below.
The real Board of Directors is scheming about lots of great stuff, but first we’re gonna need some help. See below.
Wait, this is a real thing?
You bet your Hodja 5 solo it’s real. Mixed Company of Yale Alumni, Inc. is now an officially incorporated nonprofit corporation, registered in Connecticut with a Board of Directors, a budget, and bylaws.
I’m an artist. What does that mean?
That means we’ve upgraded from being just a group of friends on Facebook who invade Viva’s every few years to a real organization that can sign contracts, elect officers, and solicit (tax-deductible!) donations. We can also do things like support the current singers and build an even stronger network of alumni. And don’t worry – we can still go to Viva’s.
Thank You Cheeses! Who did all this?
Our very own Secret Angelas, Tracey Ober '85 and Ian Janer ’11 deserve most of the credit. You probably already guessed that, didn’t you?
Who’s on this Board of Directors?
There are five of us to start:
President: M. Tracey Ober '85
Vice President: Jo Schlegel '85
Secretary: Ian Janer '11
Treasurer: Scott Hillier '11
Assistant Secretary: Mark Dunn '07
Can I join the Board of Directors?
Yes. The Board can have up to 12 members. Elections will be held each winter, coinciding with Snow Job. Even if you can’t come to New Haven you can join the Board. Contact any one of the current Board members to express your interest.
Does the Board choose the set-list for alumni concerts?
No, Derrick McBride. You’ll sing what you are assigned.
I’ve read all the way to here, what can I do to express my enthusiasm?
How about opening your wallet? The Association has a very small budget left over from the 35th reunion, but we’ll need some help to build a sustainable pot of funds that can support the group for the next 35 years. It’s easy to make a tax-deductible donation via PayPal.
Have questions or want to get more involved? Contact Ian or Tracey.
