In the autumn of 1981, a spunky gang of Yalies decided to form an entirely new kind of music group that would combine a cappella singing, sketch comedy, and a wide-ranging repertoire of music from all genres. Mixing up the best aspects of Broadway and Second City, the old Yale Songbook and rock 'n' roll, they naturally called themselves "Mixed Company.”
Over the past four decades, the group – lovingly known as "the Gump" – has united a diverse array of singers in friendship and music, toured across five continents, and released 17 studio albums. Mixed Co. also performs regular concerts in the New Haven community and provides workshops on a cappella singing for children of all ages.
Mixed Company of Yale Alumni, Inc. (MCYA) was founded around Mixed Company's 25th anniversary and incorporated in 2019 as the Gump's official alumni association. We seek to preserve, foster and encourage the educational and charitable activities of Mixed Company and Yale's other undergraduate a cappella singing groups through an organization of active, supportive alumni. Each year, our activities include:
Sponsoring charitable concerts by Mixed Company and other Yale undergraduate a cappella singing groups in community settings throughout New Haven, such as schools, hospitals and other similar educational and charitable organizations;
Collecting and preserving the repertoire and archives of Mixed Company for the educational enrichment of the groups, its alumni, and the broader Yale/New Haven community;
Hosting social and musical events for current members and alumni of Mixed Company to strengthen the bonds of the wider Gump community and facilitate continued musical education and development; and
Organizing educational and charitable alumni events and activities (such as alumni fundraisers for select non-profits).
Mixed Company of Yale Alumni, Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. To support our work, please consider making a tax-deductible donation via PayPal.
